As Caesar Montevecchio began to talk, DiPaolo knew he had been right all along about the involvement of the all-time MVP of Erie crime figures when it came to the Bolo Dovishaw murder case, and how important Montevecchio would be in solving the case that had stumped the cop for so long.

“There were three people involved that I know of for sure,” Montevecchio began.

“Go on,” Dom DiPaolo encouraged when Montevecchio paused briefly.

“There could have been more involved, but I didn’t talk with them. Someone else did.” He drew in a deep breath.

“Oh, yeah? Explain,” DiPaolo directed.

“Well, there was one person who wanted Bolo wasted. And, there was one other person who set it all up. And, there was also one other person who was the shooter. The other person who I think I know was involved, but never ever talked to, didn’t actually get involved until the day after Bolo bought it.” Montevecchio was breathing deeply now, and his words were coming more quickly as he continued, “There was another person who wasn’t involved in the hit, but who knows where the gun went. I can have him cooperate with you, too. Dominick, the truth is I can put the whole case together for you.”

It was clear Montevecchio was now pleading with DiPaolo for this deal. Then Caesar offered again, “Look, I can put the whole fucking case together for you. I’ll plead guilty to my part and all the other charges. But I want a deal on paper – and before I do anything, I have to talk first with my family.”

The two men were quiet for a few minutes as the flat country farm scenery rolled by. DiPaolo’s silence was paying off. It was a good tactic, most cops and even newspaper reporters knew. Just create an awkward period of “dead air” and the interviewee feels somewhat compelled to fill the quiet space. So, Montevecchio still wasn’t done talking.

“Actually, I can’t give you Joe Scutella, but Ricky Cimino sure can. And all I got to do is talk to Ricky and tell him I’m going to talk and I know that he will, too.” In reality, DiPaolo knew a lot more about the Pal Joey’s fire than Caesar ever suspected, but it was a good check on Montevecchio’s truthfulness and credibility to let this desperate guy ramble on.

Another pause for effect.

Then Caesar said, “And I’ll give you something else that you probably don’t even know.”

“Yeah?” DiPaolo raised his eyebrows conveying his disbelief. “What’s that?”

“Did you have a conversation a little while ago with Fasenmyer about Ricky?”

“If you’re asking,” the cop coldly said, “then you obviously already know the answer, don’t you? You know I had the conversation with Fasenmyer. How?”

“Fasenmyer taped you. And now they’re playing the fucking tape all over town. That’s how.”

DiPaolo felt himself grow flushed. “So, exactly how did you know that while you were cooling your heels in the joint?” DiPaolo probed.

“Hey, not that hard, Dom. I called someone in Erie and they told me Ray Ferritto has a copy of that fucking tape with you on it.
